DU’s valedictory event: PM chief guest, ex-VCs, noted alumni are among invitees

Former Vice-Chancellors of the varsity to eminent alumni, a host of guests have been invited to Delhi University’s valedictory ceremony celebrations on Friday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the chief guest at the event, which is part of the varsity’s centenary celebrations.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Director of South Campus Shriprakash Singh said, “We have invited former V-Cs and eminent alumni including former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, former Supreme Court Judge Ravindra Bhatt among others.”

The event will also feature stalls by top colleges, an exhibition and special broadcasts.

The varsity has invited several colleges, based on their National Institutional Ranking Frame-work ranking, to present their “best practices” at the event. Singh told The Indian Express, “Stalls by colleges have been put up in the basement of the Multipurpose Hall (at the Sports Complex). Top colleges such as Hindu, Miranda, Stephen’s will present their best work to the Prime Minister to take a look at.”

“Arrangements have also been made in each college for the ceremony to be broadcasted so that all stakeholders of the university can see it,” he added.

PM Modi will also virtually lay the foundation stone of three buildings — Faculty of Technology, a computer centre and an academic block — besides releasing a logo book and two coffee table books, university officials had said on Tuesday.

For the closing ceremony, an exhibition on the journey of 100 years of the university will be organised in the basement of the Multipurpose Hall. A meeting on advance security liaison was also organised on Tuesday under the chairmanship of V-C Yogesh Singh, said officials.

Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan will be the guest of honour at the ceremony.

Meanwhile, posters put up by All India Students’ Association cropped up across campus which posed questions on the ‘rise in college fees’ and ‘government cutting education funds’.

In his appeal before Surat court, Rahul Gandhi says was mistreated, sentenced to attract disqualification as MP

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday moved a Surat court against his conviction in a defamation case and said that he was “treated harshly at the stage of determination of sentence taking into account his position as Member of Parliament” and that the maximum sentence has caused him “irreparable loss”.

In his appeal before the Surat district and sessions court against his two-year conviction, Gandhi also stated it seemed “reasonable to argue” that the maximum sentence awarded to him was to “attract the order of disqualification (as an MP)”.

“Not only is the excessive sentence contrary to the law on the subject but is also unwarranted in the present case which has overriding political overtones,” the appeal says. Terming the conviction “erroneous”, the appeal states that the “material on which it based has not been proved in accordance with law”.

Gandhi’s appeal argues that the disqualification of an elected representative “essentially interferes with the choice of the electorate in a free and fair election” and that a by-election would cause an “enormous burden on the state exchequer”.

In his appeal, seeking suspension of the sentence and bail, Gandhi pointed out that the punishment of two years of simple imprisonment “is very harsh in view of the fact that the lower court has inflicted the same for a single defamatory imputation as to ‘why all the thieves have surname Modi'”.

Among the grounds stated for the appeal, his application says that the complainant/respondent Purnesh Modi “is not the person aggrieved of the offence and has no right to file the complaint” and that the mandatory inquiry under Section 202 of CrPC to be held before summons are issued to the accused “of outside the jurisdiction of the court is not held”.
